After our backpacking trip in South America, we learned an important truth: if you want to savor the best, most authentic cusine of the area, go to the wet market of each town. It will also be the cheapest as well!

This post is dedicated to the best local food we have encountered around the world . Continue reading Delicious local street food around the world →

“Dancing is a tool to gather people. I want to g “Dancing is a tool to gather people. I want to go to other places to give them tools. Meeting you all have inspired me. By the end of the year I want to go to 5 different districts to give people tools to dance and to know Christ.”

This is Jonathan. Besides teaching kids how to dance, and empowering the people in the ghettos of Uganda, his other passion is film. His dream is to film the stories of the ghettos—to document the strength, the miracles, and the faces of their home. The only thing that is stopping him from his dream is a few simple equipments.

If you have been following Jonathan’s story you will know that he grew up in the ghettos of Kampala, decided to change when faced at gun point, and witnessed the miracle of Jesus when he found a prostitute by name through prayer to tell
her “Jesus loves you”. Now he wants to use film to tell the world the stories of the ghettos.

If you are able to give a little towards his dream, please put a note with your gift! Link in bio.
These are the faces of Uganda that we have fell in These are the faces of Uganda that we have fell in love with over the past few weeks. They are resilient, they are genuine, and they are full of faith. These youths live in the poorest slums of Uganda. They don't know where their next meal will come from, but they teach more than 100 kids a day how to dance in order to invest into the younger generation. They are still in high school, but they lead multiple Bible studies with drug addicts, prostitutes--whomever is their neighbors.

As witnesses to their faith, we want to fundraise enough money to provide for school feels for the girls, help provide travel expenses for the youths to reach more children though dance, and more.

Will you be willing to help financially, through prayer, or by writing notes of encouragements?

“You are most welcome! This is not our house. We “You are most welcome! This is not our house. We love visitors.”

“When I left the bank I paid off everything except the house. I just couldn’t make the payments. Life was hard. But we live by faith so we just keep going. Soon I stopped picking up my calls because I was afraid it was from the bank. They told me that I had seven days to pay everything or they will take the house. They will kick us out. They even put us on the news papers. Stella and I prayed. We believe God will help but we don’t know how. No one has that much money. Seven days turned into five days, which turned into three days left. I haven’t even found a place for us to go yet! Then I received a call.
“Is this Wilson?”
“Yes, sir.”
“You don’t have enough money to pay for your house right?”
“Yes, sir.”
“How much do you need?”
“I don’t know.” I owed so much I didn’t know how much I owed. After I left the bank the interest was like 30%, so by now I have no idea.
“How long will it take you to find out how much you need?”
“Maybe two hours.”
“Okay, I will call you in two hours.”
I hurried to the bank, but the teller refuse to tell me how much. I told him that someone is willing to pay for me, but he didn’t buy it. He thought I was making excuses to get more loans. Finally he got his manager and his manager relented, “Just give home what he wants. It’s not like he can pay for it anyways. You owe 15,000 USD.” 15,000 USD?? There is no way anyone can pay for that.

Two hours later, the man called back and I gave him all my bank details. I still thought it was a joke so I didn’t check my account. One day before the deadline, I got a call.
“Wilson, I don’t know how you did it, but your loans are paid. The house is yours.”

To this day I don’t know who paid for me, but I know God did it.
“Do not spit out the water until your husband sl “Do not spit out the water until your husband sleeps”.

“Once there was this husband who beat up his wife every day. No matter what she said or did he would beat her. Finally, after 30 years she was fed up. She couldn’t take it anymore. So she goes to the witch doctor to ask for help.
“No problem! But first you have to bring me a cow, a goat, two chicken, and a fish.”
“That’s a lot of money! Where am I going to get the money to buy all these things?”
“That’s up to you.”
She was determined to end her misery so she found a way to get the cow, the goat, two chicken and the fish and she brought them all to the witch doctor.
The witch doctor walked into his house with all the animals.
“EhhAhhghee....EekBrihAhh!!”
Twenty minutes later he came out with a bottle of water.
“Here, take this. Right before your husband comes home drink a big gulp of it, but don’t swallow! This is very poisonous and if you swallow it, you will die. Then you can spit it out after your husband had gone to sleep. As long as you do this you won’t be beaten anymore.”

She went back home and did what she was told. Right before her husband came in she drank a big gulp from the bottle without swallowing it. The husband came back, ate the food she gave him and went to bed. He didn’t beat her! She did the same thing the next day. He didn’t beat her again. This repeated itself day after day, and she was never beaten again.”

“These are the kind of stories we like to tell when doing peace and reconciliation in the refugees camp. When I ask them why did the husband stop beating the wife, they all know the answer—it’s because the wife couldn’t talk with the water in her mouth. When you hold your tongue, angry words won’t be exchanged, and fights can be avoided. They find their own solutions. When they go back to the camps they try it. They learn to walk away from the conflicts and cool down and once they do they realize what they were fighting about is stupid.”
“I love Columbia. One day I was starving. I went “I love Columbia. One day I was starving. I went into the restaurant and ordered something simple so it would come fast. Soon I realized people who came after me who ordered the same thing were getting their food before me! I waited for one hour, then two hours. The waiter said not to worry. They are still preparing the meal. Then three hours passed and then four hours! If it wasn’t for the fact that I already paid I would have left a long time ago. Finally, they prepared the table. They put on a table cloth, placed some flowers and started to bring out the dishes—one after another. It was like a banquet, a feast!
“Wait, I didn’t order all these things.”
“No worries, we heard you are from Africa! All these dishes are for you—our treat.”
Soon all the cooks came out, sat around the table and just watch me eat, bite by bite. They have never seen an African eat before.

You see, sometimes when we pray, it feels like nothing is happening. You see this person’s prayer is answered and that person’s prayer is answered. What about me?? You think God is not listening. But really, God hasn’t answers your prayer yet not because he doesn’t care but because he is still preparing your heart for what he has for you. He has a feast prepared. You’re just not ready yet.”
“F**CK’IN PADDLE!” “The hardest part of t “F**CK’IN PADDLE!”

“The hardest part of the job is the language. In the early days I offended a lot of people. You have to understand, back in 1997, only the wildest, toughest people came to Uganda as tourists. So when I told them to paddle harder, they told me to say “F**CK’IN PADDLE!” Latter on, missionaries started to come and I told them to “F**CK’IN PADDLE!”, but instead of laughing they all grew quiet. A few braver ones would tell me, “Juma, that’s not a very nice word to say. It’s probably better to not use it.” But then sometimes after rafting, I would ask people, “How did yo enjoy it?”. They would look at me and say, “Dude, that was “F**ck’in awwsome!”. I was so confused—he put the word with something good!

By far, this has been the hardest word for me to learn😆
(2/2) “After that I came every Wednesday to pray (2/2) “After that I came every Wednesday to pray and talk with the witch doctor and his family. But they continued to do witch craft. I was discouraged. It doesn’t seem like their lives were changing. Finally I asked them, “Why are you still doing witch craft?”
“We don’t have God’s word. We can’t read and study it.”
Immediately I went into town and brought two bibles. One for him and his wife and the other for his kids. But I didn’t think they will change. In my heart I thought, “This will be my last time here.” Because I was discouraged, I came late. As I neared his house, I heard someone say, “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?” It was Mathew 7! The witch doctor was reading Mathew to a group of people in front of his house. It hit me in the heart. That passage was for me. I have judged and I have judged wrongly. I thought these people will not change, but it is God who changes hearts. These customers came to ask the witch doctor for help and he has started to read the Bible to them! That’s when I knew I had to do discipleship and I started to hangout with all the bad guys—the people in the ghetto, prostitutes, and witch doctors.”
(1/2) “I didn’t know what’s next. My dream s (1/2) “I didn’t know what’s next. My dream since childhood was to be a banker and finally after all these years I have my dream job, a wife, and a beautiful family. But obedience is the the best form form worship and I knew God told me to leave the bank. When I left, I used my pension to pay off my loans, for the car and everything else. I left with nothing.

Then I just started just walking on the streets and praying. I was walking and walking. Then I heard a voice—“Go there”. I jumped. I looked around and didn’t see anyone. Then I knew it was God. I turned into the street and came in front of a witch doctor’s home. Ahh, does God want me to talk with the witch doctor? But I was scared. I never use to come to places like this. What will people think of me? What if he calls out a demon? I sat right outside his house and waited. He came out after a little while.
“How can I help you, my son?”
“God has sent me to you.”
“To me?”
“Yes, sir.”
“I came to tell you that God loves you very much. I know this because I was out walking and God told me to come here to meet you.”
“Tobista! Tobista!!”
I thought maybe he was calling a demon, but out came his wife.

“Come Tobista. Sit down, sit down, and listen to this man. He has come to tell us something very important.”

I didn’t tell them anything special, I just told them, “Jesus loves you. He has never loved anyone like He loves you. I was walking in the road and I heard a voice telling me to come here. So I come here to tell you Jesus loves you. I don’t know whether you would like to accept this a Jesus who has told me to come here?

“Yes of course! No one has ever come to tell us this before. Now that you have come we must believe.”
(2/2) “The man told me that tomorrow I should go (2/2) “The man told me that tomorrow I should go this bar and I will meet this prostitute. He told me her name. Next day I went to the bar with my friends and sat in a corner. Two prostitutes came to join us.
“Do you know this prostitute?” I told them the name.
“I don’t know this person. Why are you looking for her?”
“I have something I want to tell her.”

She left and then came back again. She was the boss of the place.
“What is it that you want to tell her? You can tell me and I will tell her.”
“No, I must tell her myself.”
More time passed and no one showed up so I got ready to leave. She left to go up stairs to look for someone, but she came back with just herself.
“She is not here. Tell me, what is it that you wanted to tell her?”
I gave up, “I just wanted to tell her that God loves her.”
“Why would you want to tell that to someone you don’t know?”
“Because a stranger told me that God loves me and I prayed that God would show me a sign. He told me to come find her.”
She started to cry. “I am the person you are looking for.”
I didn’t know what to do. I just stood there watching her cry. This is the first godly thing I’ve done. This is my first sign, my first miracle. After that I couldn’t go back to the way I lived before.”

Quotes

  1. What does a travel bag mean to you?

If you pack a bag, you’ll learn who you are.

It’s not just about packing some clothes.

You’ll realize what you like the most,

And what you’ll most scared of.

You’ll also realize what you have to give up.

And you’ll learn what you mustn’t give up.

    What do you think?

Buy a new bag, and pack your things.

If you do, you will learn who you are.

And you’ll also realize where is it that you want to go.
